One of Project Pakati's board members, Mwesigye Patrick, has been awarded the Global Youth Leadership Award on Universal Health Coverage by the World Health Organisation. Twenty-eight-year old Mwesigye is the founder and team leader of the Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum.
It is a dynamic youth-led organization that seeks to advance quality health and well-being of adolescents and young people and promote gender equality at the community, national and global level.
The award was jointly made by WHO, the African Union, and Access-Challenge on the sidelines of the recent 2019 United Nations General Assembly in New York at the One by One: Target 2030 Achieving Universal Health Care: A Sustainable Future for Africa. The award was presented to Patrick by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Dr Githinji Gitahi, the co-chair of UHC2030-WHO and the CEO of Amref Health Africa. The focus of Mwesigye's organization is on sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, gender equality, ending child marriages and entrepreneurship and skills development. Other awardees were Mali's President, Ibrahim Boubacer Keita; Ethiopia's president, Sahle-Work Zawde; Kenya's president, Uhuru Kenyata, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Project Pakati Youth Advisory Board is a board of young, dedicated influencers who provide overall strategic direction on harnessing the collective influence of African youth as they network, exchange ideas, develop, and collaborate on shared agendas and, in so doing, contribute to the success of national and regional agendas. Much of this activity takes place on AFLI's collaboration platform.
