Transitions: From AFLI Fellows to Board Members

The African Leadership Institute is pleased to announce the appointments of Ronnie Ntuli, Lorna Irungu-Macharia, and Swaady Martin to the AFLI South Africa board.  AFLI is grateful to Funmi Iyanda, Elsie Kanza, and James Mwangi for their valuable and constructive contributions during their tenures as Board members.

Ronnie has been appointed Chairman of the AFLI SA board and replaces Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and Chairman of the Econet Group. AFLI wishes to thank Strive for his commitment and his generous donations to AFLI.  An esteemed South African business person who is also respected in the rest of the continent, Ronnie brings extensive leadership experience to AFLI. He is the Founder and Chairman of Thelo Group – a diversified investment company with interests in the aviation, railway and financial services sectors. Ronnie is also a member of the boards of the African Export-Import Bank (AFRIEXIMBANK), Dangote Cement, P&O Ferries and the Pan-African Private Sector Trade Policy Committee.  He also serves as a member of the Honorary International Investor Council (HIIC) for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

A 2010 Tutu Fellow, Kenyan Lorna Irungu-Macharia joins the AFLI SA board as a non-executive director.  She founded Siwa Communications, a boutique firm that provides strategic communications support to clients. This ranges from core communications strategy development, through fundamental elements of brand purpose and identity, to execution support that includes media engagement, product activations and event management. Siwa has a bias towards working with clients that have strong social impact missions across public, private and social sectors.  She is a graduate of Fast Forward in Kenya 2015 and an Eisenhower Multi-Nation Fellow, class of 2016. She has undergone three kidney transplants in the last 19 years and was the first East African in 30 years to participate in the World Transplant Games in 2013.

A 2012 Tutu Fellow, Ivorian Swaady Martin also joins the AFLI SA board as a non-executive director.  She is the founder and CEO of YSWARA, a woman-owned social enterprise that is transforming African agricultural commodities locally to contribute to the reversal of the African commodity trap. With the global rise of the “foodie” market, YSWARA is a specialty tea brand offering original African teas and teatime delicacies, beautifully packaged and distributed globally.  YSWARA is perceived amongst Africa’s leading luxury and premium brands and is present at recognized luxury retailers in 17 countries in Africa, USA, Europe, Middle-East and Asia. Before YSWARA, Swaady was a transportation director for Southern Africa at General Electric, where she led for ten-years in various roles.

These appointments align with AFLI’s commitment to reshaping leadership on the continent.
