The global mobility technology multinational, Bombardier Transportation, has announced the appointment of 2019 Tutu Fellow Makgola Makololo as Managing Director for South Africa. In this role, she is responsible for Bombardier Transportation’s strategy, development and deployment in the country, with sustainable customer and partner relationships as priorities.
Makgola is an engineer with extensive management experience in large-scale organisations and has been listed as a leader in science and technology by a variety of publications. Globally, Bombardier has nearly 60,000 employees and manufactures planes and trains.
Speaking on her appointment, Andy DeLeone, the President of the Europe, Middle East and India region at Bombardier Transportation said: “We are delighted to welcome Makgola to Bombardier. Her leadership experience and award-laden career makes her a great addition to our senior team." He said Makgola had been a trusted leader in South Africa for more than 15 years and that this appointment gave Bombardier the opportunity to refresh and strengthen its business relationships with its customers, rail operators and industry partners, and to focus on sustainable business growth.
Makgola was previously the acting Deputy Director General for Energy in the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) of the South African government with shareholder oversight on Eskom (energy), Safcol (forestry) and Alexkor (mining). In the last ten years she has gained extensive experience in the energy sector including utility operations, policy formulation and regulation.
She worked as an electrical system engineer and in various management roles for South African power utility, Eskom, and also as a senior reliability engineer for gas giant Sasol.
