2013 Tutu Fellow Monica Musonda is joining the Ethics and Governance committee of the Confederation of African Football during a time of turmoil.  Monica was nominated to that position by the Football Association of Zambia delegation at the CAF congress and appointed by CAF to serve on the committee in July.  The Zambian lawyer and founder of Java Foods serves on a number of boards of prominent African companies, and chairs the board of Airtel Networks Zambia Plc.

CAF is the administrative and controlling body for African football.  As such, it runs continental, national and club competitions and controls prize money, regulations and media rights to those competitions.

It is the biggest of the six continental confederations of FIFA. Monica joined the Ethics and Governance Committee a month after CAF began an investigation into corruption scandals that have consumed the body and shortly after CAF ceded control to FIFA.

A statement on the change in leadership at CAF  was made on the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations. She will be working with FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura, who was brought in as FIFA General Delegate for Africa.  FIFA has said that Samoura will be working with experts to oversee management at CAF, including governance and administrative procedures.

Monica is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Java Foods, a food processing company based in Zambia.   Her abilities as a corporate leader aside, her role at CAF is likely to see her drawing upon her legal experience as well.  She's a dual-qualified English solicitor and Zambian advocate with more than 15 years of post-qualification experience. She has held senior positions in private practice with Clifford Chance & Edward Nathan and has worked as in house corporate counsel at International Finance Corporation and for Aliko Dangote at Dangote Industries Limited in Lagos, Nigeria.  She began her legal career working for the Attorney General of Zambia, where she advised on the privatization of state-owned enterprises. Java Foods is a food processing company established to provide affordable nutrition to the Southern African market. It seeks to capitalize on the changing consumption patterns of the African youth market by offering them affordable and nutritious food options made from local products.
