Job Title: Director General and CEO of Nigeria's National Health Insurance Authority

Professional History


Dr Kelechi Ohiri was appointed Director-General and CEO of the National Health Insurance Agency by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in October 2023. Kelechi has previously served as a senior adviser to the Ministers of Health and Finance in Nigeria. The National Health Insurance Scheme was legislatively revamped in 2022 to operate as public/private partnership and directed at providing accessible, affordable and qualitative healthcare for all Nigerians.

Prior to this, Kelechi has held the position of managing partner at Flint Atlantic Capital Partners, an Africa-focused social impact Investment firm. A medical doctor, he also has worked as a primary care physician in various healthcare settings. His extensive experience in the healthcare sector spans clinical medicine, consultancy, and advisory roles in both the public and private sectors. 

Previously, had worked as an engagement manager at McKinsey and Company, where his focus was on assisting healthcare clients in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, particularly in the areas of private equity, strategy, and organization design.  He is the Co-Founder of the Healthcare Leadership Academy in Nigeria, and serves on the Board of the World Health Organization's Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research. He has also been the Managing Director for Strategy at the Global Alliance for Vaccines in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the time of starting the Fellowship in 2013, he was Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance of Nigeria and had served as a senior adviser to two ministers of health in Nigeria. Kelechi is a Fellow of the fifth class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-West Africa and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
