Job Title: Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Humanitarian Interventions

Professional History


Dr. Mariam is Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Humanitarian Interventions. Prior to her current role, Dr. Mariam served as Senior Special Assistant to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Internally Displaced Persons between 2015 and 2019, where among other tasks, she served as Project Lead for the Federal Government led North East Recovery and Peace Building Assessment (RPBA) for the Northeast in conjunction with World Bank, European Union and United Nations leading to the development of the nationally accepted plan for reconstruction, rehabilitation, and resettlement of the North East.

Mariam serves as project coordinator for the North East Children’s Trust (NECT); a private sector-led, multi-donor trust fund that rehabilitates vulnerable children orphaned as a result of the crises in northeast Nigeria. In this role, she coordinated the construction of the NECT Flagship Learning Centre in Maiduguri. The center is a complete ecosystem built to support 1000 children aged 5 to 18 with accommodation, education, psycho-social support, and healing, as well as equip them with requisite skills for economic empowerment.

Before her appointments with the Federal Government, Mariam worked for two successive administrations in Lagos, Nigeria between 2007 and 2015 as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education. In this role, she coordinated the establishment of the Lagos State Law Enforcement Institute (LETI), as well as the creation of a law enforcement cadre and scheme of service to define a clear career development path for over 4500 State Law Enforcement Officers.
