Job Title: Founder and CEO

Organisation: Crafts With Meaning

Professional History: Caroline Ng'ang'a-Omondi is a social entrepreneur with a strong desire to see the economic empowerment of artisans in Africa starting with her home Kenya. She is the Founder and CEO of Crafts With Meaning, a startup economic empowerment and job creation social enterprise focused on artisans in Kenya with a view to expanding into other African countries. The goals of her organisation include creating jobs by supporting artisans and standardising their products and then helping them to secure markets locally and abroad. She began Crafts with Meaning in 2017 after an encounter with talented women in Eastern Kenya who were not earning much from their skills. It has since expanded to include more than 300 women, making it a profitable social enterprise out of the initial model. The women are spread across seven Kenyan counties and Uganda and are earning consistent income. This has enabled them to be able to look after their families and contribute to society.

Caroline says she is passionate about research, training and development of artisans, especially those in rural communities.

An Accountant, Arbitrator and Chartered Mediator by training, she has 12 years of experience working for various companies in Kenya. She served as the youngest Non-Executive director at the Tourism Fund, a government-owned corporation in Kenya where she chairs the Board Audit Committee. She said that during the COVID pandemic, the tourism sector was badly affected and the board has the responsibility to ensure that we support our private sector. She also sits on the Board of Management of Ecotourism Kenya, a membership society focused on sustainability.

She is actively involved in political mobilization, strategy and civic education in Kenya. Through these efforts, she was part of a small shortlist, selected from hundreds of applicants, and publicly interviewed, for the position of Commissioner of the country’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in 2021.

In 2018, she was named as one of the Top 40 under 40 women in Kenya. She is completing a second Masters degree and has a number of arbitration and mediation qualifications, along with being a Certified Public Accountant.
