AFLI incorporates a combination of theory, the sharing of experiences by successful leaders, experiential learning, varied practical applications, and assignments, all conducted in an Oxford-style tutorial environment. During the learning process, a balance is maintained between personal development, self-reflection, and the African context of leadership. The values and ethics of leadership also form a major component of the learning. In line with the principles of servant leadership that underpin the programme, participants are required to undertake a community-based project and, in so doing, extend the benefit of their learning to the broader community. Emphasis is placed on peer interaction and feedback on the basis that leaders need to be aware of how followers experience them.
