Professional History: John-Gift Mwakhwawa is a prominent and well-respected lawyer at the Malawi Bar. Whilst working as a Managing Partner at Juris Chambers, a commercial law practice he founded in 2005, he has placed his legal skills at the service of social justice in a way that has raised his standing in society. He has represented civil society organizations and the indigent for free and engaged in groundbreaking public interest litigation through which he has made a significant contribution to the development of constitutionalism in Malawi. From February 2010 to February 2013, in his capacity as President of the Malawi Law Society (a statutory body that regulates the legal profession and serves as an independent watchdog of government), he played a particularly crucial role in the consolidation of democracy in Malawi. He has also supported academic activities and the publication of scholarly works on Malawian law. He is currently the Chairman of the Bar Committee charged with monitoring, reporting, and advocating for good governance and the rule of law.
