Living the Values, Upholding the Legacy – the Tutu Fellows without the Arch
Fellows and Associates participated in a Zoom call on 3 June 2022 on AFLI's Values and the process in which they may be further refined. Thank you very much to the Fellows and Associates who participated. A working group will consider the inputs, suggestions and feedback from the call participants and the comments here, and revert to the Fellowship group on further updates.
The video below is a recording of the discussion. Because of the importance of the discussion, the recording is posted here for those who were unable to participate in the workshop to be able to view it and do so here. Please comment below.
We would ask that Fellows and Associates do not share the link to the video externally.
Last year, the Board ratified AFLI Values which were drafted with some of the Fellows with the intention of articulating and encapsulating the values the Institute subscribes to and expects of itself and the Tutu Fellows. They capture, in summary, the leadership mindset and behavioural expectations we should collectively hold ourselves to.
The Values Workshop was focused on a collective exploration and learning of what these Values represent for us as a family and Fellowship, with the invitation and opportunity to share lessons and reflections in navigating these values in your respective leadership journeys. Below, are the draft AFLI Values that were deliberated. In terms of the way forward, it was agreed to set up a working group of Fellows and Associates to further refine the values.
With that, we wish to introduce them:
Openness and Respect:
We bring curiosity and respect for every person’s perspective, with a willingness to share our own transparently. We cultivate self-awareness by giving and receiving candid feedback. We are committed to real dialogue that enables us to empathise with different points of view.
Integrity and Courage
We strive to lead with courageous authenticity – taking a stand for our truth, even under duress - always recognising that there is a time to act, and a time to withdraw. We cultivate the resilience to risk failure, and the courage to take accountability for our own failings.
Interconnectedness and Inclusion:
We recognise our interdependence and seek win-win outcomes. We commit to creating environments where all human beings, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual preference, social status or cultural background, can thrive.
Passion and Positive Impact:
We engage with focussed energy and commitment in all that we do, living our full potential and inspiring others to do the same. We hold ourselves to account for having a positive impact in pursuit of our mission.
