Kariuki Gathitu

Kariuki GathituBackground/Challenge:

From a young age, Kariuki had an insatiable appetite for dissecting electronic devices. As he sees it, his purpose in life was to create technology that will heal Africa and transform it from the Dark Continent to the continent of light.

As a technical leader at Equity Bank, Kariuki was involved in implementing the bank’s Mobile banking platform, including the development of M-KESHO, an integration technology used to transfer money from bank accounts to M-PESA. Since then, he has created Zege Technologies Nairobi, a company he heads as CEO, and where he has developed the application MPAYER, an important part of Kenya’s world-leading adoption of mobile money within its financial services sector. Along the way, Kariuki has won great recognition with organisations such as the United Nations and the African Union, global media attention and various awards.

“The Leadership for Change Programme was a great experience that still touches on my everyday life when it comes to leading myself and others. It was a revelation of where East Africa is at currently, where I am as a leader, and the role I need to play to achieve my vision.”
