Two Tutu Fellows are on Avance Media's inaugural 100 Most influential African Women list. They are 2010 Tutu Fellow Jackie Chimhanzi, the CEO of the African Leadership Institute; and 2012 Fellow Julie Gichuru, an award-winning journalist and news anchor and executive in Kenya. The list is comprised of women from 35 African countries who are role models and whose accomplishments inspire the next generation of women.
Categories include Business Leadership, CSO & Philanthropy, Diplomacy, Education & Literature, Entertainment, Entrepreneurship, Governance, Legal, Media, and Sports.
Avance Media says the 100 women who were selected are "changing the feminine narrative and challenging the status quo of women on the continent". The two Tutu Fellows rub shoulders on this inaugural list with other women who occupy eminent leadership positions, that include: Ethiopia's President, Sahle-Work Zewde; Liberia's Vice President Jewel Taylor; Namibia's Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila; UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed; the former president of Liberia, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson; and Catherine Samba-Panza, the interim president of the Central African Republic.
Julie Gichuru is a journalist and media executive who currently hosts Africa Leadership Dialogues, a syndicated current affairs program that focuses on African development and growth. She also hosts other weekly news and current affairs programmes. In 2010, Julie established the Footprints Africa Foundation to engage and support innovative youths.
Jackie Chimhanzi has been the CEO of AFLI since 2016. AFLI's Tutu Fellowship is considered among the most prestigious leadership programmes on the African continent. She has played an important role in acting as a matchmaker between the Fellowship and organisers searching for talented, principled leaders for a series of initiatives. She has also made it straightforward for aspiring young African leaders to find opportunities for growth with a comprehensive directory of all of the leadership programmes on the continent along with the type of programmes offered. She also serves as a non-executive board member of the AdvTech Group (JSE-listed) and Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Limited (ZSE-listed).
