2013 Tutu Fellow Nkuli Bogopa raised R99,000.00 for the children’s orchestra at St. Matthews School in Soweto, all in a space of two weeks. On 4 November 2018, thanks to Nkuli's organizing skills and working closely with Sister Berchmans of the Catholic Sisters of Mercy, the children performed at the Houghton Golf Club. It was an unforgettable experience for both the children and the audience.
Nkuli says that this came about from an idea she had when she reached a birthday milestone.
Instead of asking for gifts, she decided to give back to the community. It is then by chance that she discovered the St Matthews children’s orchestra, a talented group of children who needed assistance with growing their talents and their band. Nkuli decided that this was the perfect timing towards fulfilling her wish.
Despite doubting herself along the way, Nkuli was energized by the excitement from the children, who were looking forward to this event. She persisted, and ultimately made it happen.
“I remember driving up to the venue on the day of the show and witnessing the excitement on faces of the children. I was overwhelmed by emotion…also from the support I’d received from the community. This was my first time organizing such an event but I knew it was something I had to do”
The event was held outside the school premises and included inspirational speakers from the music industry, who urged the children to follow their dreams. This exposure was also an opportunity for the young talents to see possibilities outside their own boundaries. Nkuli has since set a date for the children’s orchestra to perform in front of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
