Trevor Manuel to chair AFLI's Board of Directors

The African Leadership Institute in South Africa (AFLI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Trevor Manuel as Chairman, following the end of Ronnie Ntuli’s tenure after three years of service during which time he very successfully restructured the Institute’s governance and prepared for a seamless transition as the Founders stepped back.

The African Leadership Institute was founded in 2003 by Sean Lance and Peter Wilson and is committed to nurturing the leadership capabilities of Africa's highest potential young leaders in the age range 25-39.  It is the vision of the Founders that this values-based network of visionary, strategic, self-aware and ethical African leaders become the catalysts for change and the transformation of Africa. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the Patron of the Institute and the flagship offering is the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Programme which is delivered in partnership with Oxford University.

Speaking of the appointment, Peter Wilson, the co-founder said:

“AFLI is fortunate to have someone of Trevor Manuel’s calibre as Chairman and the AFLI board is looking forward to working, under his leadership and guidance, to take the Institute to its next level of impact. Trevor Manuel’s illustrious career in the South African government, on the Boards of international institutions and, subsequently, in business is well known. AFLI is honoured to be able to call upon his extensive experience and expertise to guide the Institute as it builds upon its acknowledged success in developing Africa’s highest potential emerging leaders. Trevor is already familiar with AFLI's flagship programme, the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Programme, as he has generously devoted his time over the past years to engage with cohorts of Tutu Associates and share his leadership experiences with them.”

Trevor Manuel is Chairman of Old Mutual Limited and also serves on the board of Old Mutual Life Assurance Company (South Africa). He is a Non-Executive Director & Deputy Chairperson of Rothschild & Co. South Africa and an Envoy on Investment to the President of South Africa. In April 2020, President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union, appointed him as a Special Envoy of the AU in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He has extensive government experience having served as a Cabinet Minister from 1994 to 2014 under the first four Presidents of a democratic South Africa as Minister of Trade and Industry, Finance Minister, and Minister in the Presidency responsible for the National Planning Commission. During his Ministerial career, Trevor assumed several ex officio positions in international bodies, including the United Nations Commission for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank, the IMF, the G20, the African Development Bank and the Southern African Development Community.
