International accolades for Fellow's documentary

StateOfMind

The latest film by 2008 Fellow, Hopewell Chin'ono, State of Mind is being received well.  Hopewell is an award-winning Zimbabwean international journalist and film maker.  His film, which deals with mental health, is being extremely well received by audiences and critics alike.  It was nominated for Best Documentary at the Heart of England Film Festival and will be screened at the film festival in June. The film was also selected for the 2019 Festival International du Film Pan-Africain de Cannes, in France, which ran from April 18th to 22nd, 2019.  It was also nominated for an award and screening at the African Film Festival in Dallas.

Statement by the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellows on the unrest in Zimbabwe
17th January 2019

The Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellows of the African Leadership Institute are a diverse group of civic, political and business leaders from 40 African countries, who are concerned with the governance and development of the African continent. We, the Tutu Fellows, are alarmed by the growing unrest in Zimbabwe and, most worryingly, by the Zimbabwean government’s reaction to it. The unrest by ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe is in response to a hike in the fuel price in Zimbabwe, which is now the most expensive in the region.

Tutu Fellow premieres documentary on mental illness

2008 Tutu Fellow Hopewell Chin’ono has premiered his new documentary film titled State of Mind on mental illness in Zimbabwe in Harare. The film by the award-winning Zimbabwean journalist and documentary filmmaker highlights an untold story of how Zimbabweans address mental illness in their communities.  The premiere opened to a packed auditorium and included the guest of honor, the minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Dr Sekai Nzenza.  When it finished, Hopewell received a standing ovation from an emotional audience for the documentary.

Change comes to Zimbabwe

For millions in Zimbabwe born since liberation, the ZANU-PF government led by 93-year-old Robert Mugabe is the only government they have known. So the removal of President Mugabe from power by the military this month has been a watershed moment.  With long-time government insider Emmerson Mnangagwa now the new President, Zimbabwe is wondering if the country will continue the trajectory it has held under ZANU-PF, or if the country will chart a new positive course.

Dear Mr President,

Since I came to your office to tender my resignation in 2001, you and I have not had any occasion to interact or communicate. I hope, however, you will still recall one of the observations I made about your legacy. I will not repeat it here because for me that remains a privileged conversation. I will, however, observe that I think you still have an opportunity to help create a foundation Zimbabweans can use to build a cohesive and successful nation.
