Fellow to head communications at Mastercard Foundation

2012 Tutu Fellow, TV Host and Media Executive, Julie Gichuru, has joined the Mastercard Foundation as Head of Public Affairs and Communications.  Julie has a 19-year career that spans the fields of broadcast, print, and digital media. Following the 2007 violent Kenyan elections, Julie’s peace specials resonated with viewers. In the last decade, she has focused primarily on driving conversations with African and global leaders, through a pan-African television show, Africa Leadership Dialogues and her media company Arimus Media Limited.

Fellow appointed to chair sport broadcasting rights hearing

2006 Fellow Palesa Kadi has been appointed to chair the ICASA hearings on sport broadcasting rights. Palesa is a media activist, researcher and has worked as a regulator in the broadcasting and telecommunications space, where she serves as an ICASA councillor. ICASA is South Africa's broadcast regulator. 

The hearings - and issue - is politically sensitive, as big-draw sport is currently mainly broadcast on expensive pay channels, locking out many ordinary South Africans from being able to watch sport on free-to-air TV.

Lorna Irungu to lead premiere African communications agency

2010 Tutu Fellow Lorna Irungu–Macharia has been appointed new Managing Director of The Gina Din Group, Africa's most-awarded communications agency. Lorna, who prior to taking on this role ran her own boutique communications firm, brings deep industry experience to the role. With more than 20 years of work experience, Lorna is well versed in media and event management, crisis communication, strategy, and brand development. Her work has focused on clients with a strong social impact mission across private, public and social sectors and is a key part of experience she will be bringing to the role.
