Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has re-appointed 2012 Tutu Fellow James Mworia to a second term as the Chancellor of Machakos University.  James is the CEO Centum Investment Company, the largest listed investment company in East Africa, with approximately $1.8 billion USD in direct and third party assets under management. 

Machakos University was founded in 1957 as a Technical Rural Training School by the then colonial Government. It was converted into Machakos Technical and Trade School in 1958, Machakos Technical School in 1967, Machakos University College in 2013, and chartered to Machakos University in October 2016.

2014 Tutu Fellows Isaac Kwaku Fokuo and Sam Mensah and 2012 Tutu Fellow Julie Gichuru are collaborating in a partnership between Ananse.com, Mastercard Foundation and DHL to create economic opportunities for young African creatives. Summarized, the site slogan is Beautiful things, made by Africa, delivered globally.  Ananse Africa, a startup ecommerce platform, launched in April in Johannesburg and Lagos, connecting African designers with local and international consumers.

The site says many African artisans, designers and artists face various challenges, making it difficult to transact with customers throughout the world.  Ananse Africa was set up to unlock the African creative economy, empower designers, merge tech and fashion; and most importantly, enable consumers from all over the world to shop online for beautiful pieces, from talented artisans, designers and artists throughout key African regions.

2012 Tutu Fellow Swaady Martin has launched an independent publishing house and online store called Loving Kindness Boma. It provides resources to help cultivate a culture of love, kindness, compassion, understanding, mindfulness, introspection and self-love within the family. Loving Kindness Boma provides a selection of beautifully illustrated stories with diverse main characters created to foster conscious values, social-emotional wellbeing and mindfulness in children.

Swaady explains on the site that the choice of the name borrows from the African tradition of a Boma being a place for storytelling and a coming together of people.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) has announced the appointment of 2012 Tutu Fellow Lydie Hakizimana as its Chief Executive Officer. The AIMS International Governing Board (IGB) made the announcement on the 4th of November 2020, following a unanimous decision.

Founded in 2003, AIMS is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for post-graduate training in mathematical sciences, research and public engagement in STEM. With centres in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda, AIMS is leading Africa’s socio-economic transformation through innovative scientific training, cutting-edge research, and public engagement.

2012 Tutu Fellow Julie Gichuru reveals in a TEDx talk how she has committed to tell Africa’s story and she challenges everyone to do so with their own means. With her long experience hosting TV shows and working in the news industry, Julie has been striving to offer African content to its people, rather than just importing it from other cultures or abroad. She gave her talk as part of the Brookhouse School series in 2013. 

She said the younger generation that concerned her especially, as many young Africans were going through something of an identity crisis regarding culture. Julie has always been preoccupied with young Africans, helping through her foundation Footprints Africa Foundation to provide better living conditions and education for children. She makes the case that to transform Africa, it cannot be possible without people aware of their roots.
