On 22 May 2021, President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed Elsie Kanza PhD as one of 22 ambassadors for Tanzania. Elsie is a 2008 Tutu Fellow.  

A statement issued by the director of communications at State House, Gerson Msigwa read that "The appointment of these Ambassadors commenced today, May 22, 2021 and they will be sworn in on dates to be announced later."

Elsie's most recent position was as the Special Advisor to the President of the World Economic Forum.

2018 Tutu Fellow Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg PhD has been appointed as Rise’s inaugural Executive Director. Rise is an initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust – the anchor program of a $1 billion philanthropic commitment by Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The website says Rise is a talent programme designed to increase opportunity for exceptional young people who need it to do more for others, together, throughout their lives. Wanjiru joined the organisation in April 2021.

Rise says that exceptional talent drives the pace and scale of global progress. But the identification and support of that talent is often ad hoc and fragmented across countries, educational institutions, and industries. As a result, some of the world’s most talented people go undiscovered, are inefficiently matched to development opportunities, or are limited in their opportunity to work in service of the public benefit as they enter the workforce. The initiative seeks to change that.

2014 Tutu Fellow Ada Osakwe has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Factor[e] Ventures. Factor[e] Ventures supports the growth of early stage, technology-enabled companies, solving challenges in energy, agriculture, mobility, and waste in emerging markets. They favour projects with de-carbonized solutions for emerging & frontier markets.

Speaking on her appointment, Ada said that she deeply believes that tech is what will transform Africa’s fortunes in a decentralized, inclusive way.  Ada was found partly as a result of the Tutu Fellow's network. Factor[e] approached 2019 Fellow Marcia Ashong, whose company TheBoardroom Africa, was able to connect them with Ada.

2006 Tutu Fellow Janah Ncube has been appointed as the Global Deputy CEO for Crisis Action.  Previously, she was the Global Campaigns Director for four years. She was promoted to the new position in April 2021. 

Crisis Action works with individuals and organisations from global civil society to protect civilians from armed conflict, with offices in Addis Ababa, Beirut, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Nairobi, New York, Paris and Washington DC.  The organisation acts as a convenor of joint action and works behind the scenes to enable coalitions to work quickly and effectively.  As a coordinating body it says it can be more effective doing so without seeking a public profile, rather it is the voice of the coalition that matters.  Crisis action says it's only agenda is the protection of civilians.

2015 Tutu Fellow Wiebe Boer PhD has been appointed to serve on the the UN Technical Working Group 5: Finance and Investment, joining 27 other sector experts. This cross-cutting and multidisciplinary UN Technical Working Group addresses “how public and private finance and investment can be mobilized and leveraged to achieve the 2025 Milestones, SDG7 and carbon neutrality, taking also into consideration enabling mechanisms such as the fiscal response to COVID-19, fossil fuel subsidy reform; green investment regulation; risk management and insurance.”

The objective of Working Group 5 is is to distill the expertise and inputs from the members of the working group to identify recommendations that are “ambitious, innovative and fit-for-purpose, of high impact, and replicable at scale across geographies and themes”.

2011 Tutu Fellow Jacqueline Musiitwa has joined the board and audit committee of IDEO.  The board appointments occurred at the beginning of March 2021.

IDEO is an international non-profit design studio that designs products and services alongside organizations that are committed to creating a more just and inclusive world.  The design and consulting firm was founded in Palo Alto, California and has offices in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and China.  IDEO uses design and a human-centred approach to its projects, services, environments, and digital experiences, and has long been at the forefront of creating change and a more just and inclusive world through design.

2013 Tutu Fellow Hynd Bouhia PhD has published a book, African Girl, Africa Woman: How agile, empowered and tech-savvy females will transform the continent... for good. The book follows her travels across the African continent and explores the pivotal role played by African women in realizing the continent’s digital and technological revolution.

From Casablanca to Cape Town to Cairo, and from the ancient pyramids to venture capital-financed entrepreneurs and start-ups, this work explores 'how to prepare the African girl to fill, own, and lead this vital role into the 21st century'. 

Serah Makka-Ugbabe, a 2018 Tutu Fellow, has been promoted to ONE’s Executive Director for Engagement and Mobilisation. In this role, she will lead ONE’s work on global campaigning and digital strategy, as well as the coordination, growth, and engagement of ONE’s diverse and global supporter base. She was promoted to this post in March 2021.

ONE is a global nonprofit campaigning to end extreme poverty and preventable disease by 2030, so that everyone, everywhere can lead a life of dignity and opportunity. ONE lobbys political leaders in world capitals and runs grassroots campaigns to pressure governments to do more to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, and empowers citizens to hold their governments to account.

2009 Tutu Fellow James Mwangi has been selected for the prestigious Maurice R Greenberg World Fellows Program at Yale University. The program enables “extraordinary individuals, from across the globe and from diverse disciplines, to increase their capacity to make the world a better place.” Aside from James, the Class of 2021 includes a Brazilian diplomat, an Israeli journalist, and a British expert in the ethics of artificial intelligence among the 16 women and men selected as 2021 World Fellows.

The cohort brings the total number of World Fellows since the program’s start in 2002 to 375 Fellows, representing 91 countries.  The program selects a diverse cohort of World Fellows to spend four months together in residence at Yale University “to grow intellectually, share knowledge, strengthen skills and expand networks.”

2007 Tutu Fellow Takalani Musekwa has been appointed as Group Head of Reward at Discovery. Discovery Limited is a South Africa-based financial services group that is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Musekwa is a Master Reward Specialist registered with The South African Reward Association (SARA) and a Chartered HR Practitioner registered with the South African Board for People Practice (SABPP). He previously served as the Head of Remuneration and Benefits at the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and as its Chief HR Officer (acting) between 2010 and 2021.

2006 Tutu Fellow Kunyalala Maphisa has been appointed as an Independent Non-executive Director to the Board of PPC Cement and a Member of its Investment Committee and the Social, Ethics and Transformation Committee. The appointments were made as of the beginning of February 2021.

Kunyalala is co-founder and Principal Partner for Brighton Wealth Subsaharan, a South African based investment and advisory firm with a diversified investment portfolio. She is also the President of BWASA, the Business Women's Association of South Africa, the largest association of professionals and businesswomen in South Africa.

Dr Angela Gichaga - a 2019 Tutu Fellow - joined the PSI Board in January 2021. Population Services International (PSI) is a non-profit global health organization with programs targeting malaria, child survival, HIV, and reproductive health. It is based in Washington, DC; Nairobi; and Amsterdam and has been in existence for more than half a decade.

PSI says that while it is a nonprofit, it uses measurable business practices to build strong health systems in the private and public sector to save lives. It has more than 8,000 local experts in more than 50 countries with which it works. 

2008 Tutu Fellow Nitesh Dullabh has been appointed to serve as a director on the governing board of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP). The ISSP is the world's leading professional association of sustainability practitioners.

Nitesh is a global environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainabilty development goal (SDG) expert, and has over 20 years experience in facilitating Fortune 200 companies with their global expansion projects in developed and emerging markets.

2010 Tutu Fellow Lerato Mataboge delivered a TEDx Lyttleton Women Talk on the necessity and urgency for African countries to trade among themselves as a way to address economic challenges and recover from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Titled, Why Intra-Africa Trade Matters, she says that African countries not only need to trade among themselves as a way to address economic challenges and undo colonial patterns of consumption and distribution, they need to begin doing so with a sense of urgency.  This type of trade can play a key role in helping the continent recover from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She begins her talk about vanilla, the bulk of which in the global market is grown in Madagascar.  Madagascar exports it and when it comes back to the continent, it costs so much more. Africa trading away its resources must change, she says, and the continent must begin adding value before exports occur so as to retain the value at home.

2010 Tutu Fellow Robtel Neajai Pailey PhD has launched her monograph Development, (Dual) Citizenship and Its Discontents in Africa: The Political Economy of Belonging to Liberia. Robtel is an Assistant Professor in International Social and Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Robtel's book asks whether dual citizenship reproduces inequalities, using Liberia, Africa’s first black republic, as an extended case study. It is based on over 200 in-depth interviews in West Africa, Europe and North America. The inaugural launch of the book was held in Monrovia at the University of Liberia on official publication day on 7 January.
