Fellow wins top awards for advancing African Skincare Technology


Products from an African skin care line started just two years ago by 2009 Tutu Fellow  Dr Theo Mothoa-Frendo did well against big brands in the marketplace in the 2019 Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics New Product Competition Awards which is run by the SA Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Review. 

The company she founded in 2017, African Dermal Science, makes the Uso skincare line, which reached the market in 2018.  The products are specifically formulated for Africans and the African climate. The Uso Active Day Cream won first and second runner-up in two categories where it was nominated alongside iconic and established brands. 

The products were recognized for excellence in Innovation and Scientific Formulation at the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics New Product Competition 2019 Awards, which were held on 10 October.

Working with renowned local cosmetic scientists, medical doctors, women with darker skin tones and marketing and advertising experts, Dr Mothoa-Frendo developed her skin care range using only the finest botanical ingredients and the most advanced proven actives.  The products are packed with Centella, Chamomile, Pro vitamin-B, Hyaluronic Acid, Kombucha and Niacinamide.

The SA Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Review awards recognize products for excellence in Formulation, Packaging, Regulations and Compliance, and Marketing. Dr Theo’s company was recognized alongside big brands. African Dermal Science is a South African, black female-owned business, focused on the research, development and manufacturing of advanced skin and healthcare solutions targeted at addressing the specific needs of Africans and her products are made in South Africa to support job-creation.
