Fellow wins prestigious 2019 African Banker award

2008 Fellow, Mitchell Elegbe, the Group Managing Director of Interswitch Limited, has been awarded the African Banker Icon award, at the 2019 African Banker Awards held at a prestigious Gala Dinner in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The Awards, held annually as a co-event of the annual meetings of the African Development Bank, have established themselves as the Oscars of African banking. They celebrate excellence in banking and finance on the African continent. Elegbe’s company, Interswitch, is predicted to be Africa’s first Africa-led unicorn – a tech start up whose value exceeds $1bn.

The ‘Icon’ category is awarded to an individual or institution for their outstanding contribution in the field of business, banking and finance. They are chosen by the awards committee, who will have noted excellence in their area of expertise and for their work in helping to change the perception of Africa as well as contributing to the establishment of best global practice in the continent. This award in the past has been given to outstanding individuals such as Eleni Gabre-Madhin, founder of the Ethiopian Commodities Exchange.

The prestigious award for Elegbe comes just weeks after Elegbe was recognized and featured by The Africa Report in the list of 100 Most Influential Africans.  The publication described him as being a fintech frontiersman whose company started as an integrated payment and transaction in 2002 and is now partnering with international rival, Visa, to process digital payments across Africa.
