Professional History


Charles Washoma is the Vice President of International Affiliated Institutes at the Chartered Insurance. He is a business executive and management consultant working in East & Southern Africa. He has 28 years of work experience, 22 of which have been at senior management, executive, and board of directors’ level in insurance, risk management, and consulting services. Charles provides value for businesses to seize opportunities for growth and mitigate risk to protect the value created. He is valued for business analysis, developing strategy, market-entry, P&L management, achieving sustainable revenue & profitability, ethics & compliance, impacting organizational culture, and forming lasting stakeholder partnerships. Charles served as CEO of African Life Assurance (now Sanlam Life Insurance Tanzania) a business he actively led from 10% to 47% market share. He has also held other senior roles at leading organizations including Africa Practice, MicroEnsure, Liaison Risk & Financial Services, and AON where he successfully served as Country Manager, Principal Officer, General Manager, and Broking Manager respectively. He has also worked as a Management Consultant leading a consultancy network, Amua, assisting clients in East & Southern Africa. In addition to his risk financing expertise (as an insurer, intermediary, and Insurtech) Charles’ experience covers organizational leadership; mission, vision & philosophy; strategy and business model development; market analysis; culture & change management; enterprise risk management; ethics and governance; as well as business growth and development across financial services, infrastructure, public services, and consumer sectors. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa (IoDSA) and has served as an Independent Non-Executive Director and executive committee member on a number of boards of directors and governing councils of organizations that include UAP Old Mutual, Tanzania National Reinsurance Corporation (TANRE), the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI), Aids Business Coalition (ABCT), Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ), and the Association of Tanzania Insurers (ATI). For many years Charles was an active member of the CEO Roundtable of Tanzania and the Young Presidents Organization (YPO). Charles has served as Board Chairman of the Aids Business Coalition (Tanzania) a non-profit organization established as the private sector’s response to HIV/AIDS and part of the Pan African Business Coalition and the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC). He currently serves as Vice President, International Affiliated Institutes for the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) an Insurance sector professional body of over 120,000 members globally; Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Tutu Leadership Fellows Network comprising of in excess of 400 Fellows from the African Leadership Institute’s flagship Leadership Fellowship Programme; and Chairman of the Audit, Risk & Compliance Committee (ARC), UAP Old Mutual (Tanzania) a subsidiary of the Old Mutual Group. Charles speaks four languages (English, Shona, Ndebele, and Swahili) and is comfortable in multicultural settings. He has lived in various countries including Zimbabwe, Tanzania, UK, and briefly in Rwanda & Canada. He has also traveled to over 40 countries around the world for work, vacation, and sabbatical purposes. These countries span across multiple continents including Africa, Europe, North America, and S.E. Asia. He is a 2011 Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellow.
