Sizwe Damane
South Africa
Occupational Information
Job Title: Chief Operations Officer Corporate & Investment Banking Risk, ABSA
Professional History
Sizwe is currently the Chief Operations Officer Corporate & Investment Banking Risk at ABSA where he is responsible for managing credit risk across the businesses the bank operates in on the continent.
Before joining Barclays Africa, which then rebranded to ABSA, he was the Head of Credit Risk Analytics and reporting in the Balance Sheet Management division of Nedbank Group, where he was also awarded the group-wide Top Achiever Award for excellence in 2012. Sizwe’s career in the financial sector began as a graduate at Liberty Group in their Finance and Actuarial division, holding various positions at Liberty before concluding his tenure there as a credit risk analyst in their then newly-formed LibFin division.
Sizwe is passionate about community involvement. His passion was kindled early in his career where he played a major role in influencing the Liberty Group suppliers to donate services and equipment to start a careers centre at the University of Fort Hare, a university he believes holds historic relevance and rich culture, having produced excellent African leaders.
More recently, Sizwe initiated the Everybody Has a Story to Tell project at Barclays Africa’s Corporate and Investment Bank. The initiative is aimed at using the power of words through common experiences to give South African youth hope that they have a future despite the difficult circumstances they currently find themselves in, including physical and emotional abuse, poverty, and teenage pregnancy.
Sizwe is part of the 2018 Symphonia for South Africa Partners for Possibility project as one of the business leaders on a partnership process with a principal from an under-resourced school in South Africa.
