Professional History

Julie is the head of Public Affairs and Communications at the Mastercard Foundation.  Prior to her appointment, she had had a lengthy career as a journalist and news anchor in Kenya. She has hosted the Africa Leadership Dialogues, a syndicated current affairs program with a focus on African development and growth. And she has been a TV host with East African broadcaster, Citizen TV. She also had a weekly prime time news and current affairs program, Sunday Live with Julie Gichuru.

In 2009 Julie conceptualized and hosted Fist to Five for Change, which facilitated reconciliation and healing for victims and perpetrators of post election violence in Kenya. She has also pioneered an wide number of television shows, from the first Kenyan investigative TV series, The Inside Story, to various current affairs shows including the celebrated post election peace specials Voices of Reason.

In 2010 Julie and her husband Anthony established the Footprints Africa Foundation to engage and support innovative youths with a passion for development. The foundation has launched a dynamic high school debate platform, the Great Debaters Contest, in partnership with youth organization, Jamhuri Peace Foundation, and it has facilitated the Natembea Campaign, which seeks to give every child in East Africa access to a decent pair of shoes and engages in education on good hygiene.

Julie has numerous awards and fellowships and has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the top 20 Young Power Women in Africa.
