Professional History

Mohamed Cassim is the managing director of Abacus Advisory, a niche consulting firm focused on challenging and transformative assignments on the African continent. He has advised leading corporations, multilateral organizations and governments on strategic organizational, financial and change-management initiatives. He enjoys working with people on assignments that promise high-impact or transformative outcomes. One of his recent engagements includes advising the President of Liberia, as part of a team from the Africa Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), on optimizing resource and strategic management across the Government of Liberia.

Another notable project that Mohamed participated in, from the treasury perspective, was the establishment of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). Work on this involved defining new fund-flow pathways and associated governances for administrating funds accessible to the Agency (including approximately USD 10 billion annually in social grants). Mohamed is also a recognized expert on financial management issues and processes. He managed the effort to deliver a standardized chart of accounts for national and provincial government departments in South Africa, and was a key member of the team designing a process to regulate mega projects in South Africa.
