Job Title: Director of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences

Professional History

Herine is the Director of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.  Her responsibilities at the program include: training of mathematics and science teachers on innovative and gender-responsive pedagogies; resourcing of schools to better support access to mathematics; and ensuring the quality of mathematics and science education is maintained; community and public engagement; and, evidence collection for policy dialogue.

Originally from Kenya, but now based in Rwanda, Herine regularly represents AIMS in continental forums and policy dialogue sessions on mathematics and science education.

Herine is a researcher at heart. She has a keen interest in contributing to improving the teaching, learning, and assessment of STEM in African schools and institutions of higher learning. As a result, she situates most of her research within the critical paradigm. Her research interest encompasses self-regulated learning; a learner’s relationship with STEM disciplines; education interventions; professional development of STEM teachers; and STEM teaching and learning in African institutions of higher learning.

Herine has presented her research at a number of conferences, including the British Education Researchers Association (BERA), and the African Conference for International Commission for Mathematics Education (AFRICME).

She is also a Commonwealth Scholar.
