Professional History


Wendy A. Burgers is a biomedical research scientist working at the University of Cape Town. She has been involved in the development and testing of vaccines against HIV as part of the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative. This work has taken her into the field of HIV immunology and she has embarked on a number of research projects examining immune responses in HIV-infected individuals in order to gain insight into mechanisms of immune control to apply to vaccine development.

She trains postgraduate students and has been involved in capacity development and training in HIV vaccine immunology at a number of African workshops. Her professional involvement in the field of HIV/AIDS is complemented by her voluntary work with a not for profit organization, SHADE, in empowering and equipping African women to set up social projects related to supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS in their local communities .

Qualifications


Masters degree in Medical Virology at the University of Cape Town PhD from Cambridge University, UK. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship awarded by the Medical Research Council in South Africa
