Lifting Africa's economy through aviation

2010 Tutu Fellow Eric Kacou has joined forces with Hassan El-Houry to write a book on some of the difficulties facing aviation in Africa and how it could revitalise African economies.  Titled Fly Africa: How Aviation Can Generate Prosperity Across the Continent, the book highlights how aviation could become one of Africa’s greatest strengths, underpin its economic growth and connect it with the rest of the world. Africa’s aviation industry currently trails much of the world, and although Africans make up 12% of the world’s population, they are only 2% of its flying passengers.

Beware Africa's grey rhinos - African Business piece

There is no such thing, of course, as a 'grey rhino'.  2009 Tutu Fellow James Mwangi writes that he came across the the term in a piece on business in China and that he found it instructive.  In the piece, a grey rhino was analogous to highly probable, high-impact threats that people should see coming, but don't.  Writing about the threat of 'grey rhinos' in Africa for African Business, he looks at some of the factors that should be obvious to governments across the continent and which they have failed to address.

Tutu Fellows at G20 in Germany

Several Tutu Fellows were invited in their various capacities as part of an effort to showcase another face of Africa, that of African entrepreneurs.  The session they attended comes ahead of the leaders summit of the G20 on 7 July.   Many countries in Africa already have strong political and economic partnerships with the G20.  Input ahead of the July meeting was sought on new options for boosting sustainable economic growth, investment and stability in Africa.

New African economic development analysis by Tutu Fellow

2015 Tutu Fellow Landry Signé has published a new book titled Innovating Development Strategies in Africa.  It looks at international, regional and national drivers that play a role in African policy and economic transformation and the shift from state-led strategies to regional economic integration.  Signe reviews and analyses postcolonial strategies for economic development and provides an explanation of policy innovations since the 1960s.  A focus is Francophone Africa, where he provides detailed case studies.

Fellow joins Presidential energy task team for Africa

2016 Tutu Fellow Succès Masra has been appointed to the Presidential Task Team team at the African Development Bank that has been tasked with delivering the New Deal on Energy in Africa. The team will be in charge of projects like Inga Hydroelectric, which will be the largest of its kind on the continent, and the African Renewable Energy Initiative.  Masra, the Principal Energy Economist at the bank, will play a pivotal role in mobilizing capital for financing of the energy projects that will be part of this project's portfolio.

Fellow appointed to senior economic development role in Nigerian government

Tutu Fellow Jumoke Oduwole has been appointed as a senior economic development advisor in the Nigerian government.  She is the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment in the Office of the Vice President.  The President has given the Vice President the authority to take a supervisory role on developing the Nigerian economy.  Oduwole will also be assisting the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, who is new to international trade, although he has a background in private equity.
